WHAT IS

ENERGY
?
OBJECTIVES
1 Define energy.
2 Describe the two main forms of energy.

3 Give examples of the two main

forms of energy.
ENERGY
Energy is defined as the
ability to do work. You are
able to do things because of
energy. You can jump, ride a
bike, and play because of
energy.

Q

What are the two main

forms of energy?
FORMS OF
There ENERGY
are two main forms of
energy— potential and
kinetic energy. Potential
energy is stored energy while
kinetic energy is moving
energy.
A stationary bike on top of the
hill has stored energy called
potential energy.
When the bike starts moving
downhill, its potential energy is
transformed into kinetic energy.
POTENTIAL
ENERGY
If an object is stationary, it has
stored energy called potential
energy. You can think of this
type of energy as the "potential"
of the object to do work.
EXAMPLES OF POTENTIAL
ENERGY

Q
What are other examples
of objects that have
potential energy?
KINETIC
ENERGY
If an object is moving, it has
kinetic energy. Kinetic energy is
the energy that an object
possesses due to its motion. If
the object moves faster, it has
more kinetic energy.
EXAMPLES OF KINETIC
ENERGY

a basketball thrown a bicycle a moving volleyball

in the air in motion during a game
