DESIGN OF A HAND DRIVEN MACHINE FOR MAKING CARRY BAG FROM NEWSPAPER

May 5, 2012

Double drive gumming and folding type carry bag machine This machine was similar in construction to the machine stated above but it had gumming mechanism for the application of gum consisting of handle, vertical shafts, and guide rod for gumming tank, gumming cams gum tank and tank holder. So there were 2 drive assemblies one each for gumming and folding. But the gumming was not proper and hence the machine was not acceptable.

Foot-operated paper bag machine

K J Thomas an owner of Universal Eco Bags in Kerala,

invented this machine named Bagmaster, which runs on motor. The paper is put in from one side, to be passed under six iron wheels that create the creasing. The creased paper is collected from the other side. It has a foot-operated accelerator through which the speed of the iron wheels can be controlled. The harder you press the accelerator, the faster the wheels will move. It is priced at Rs 40,000, weighing 85 kg.

LIMITATIONS OF THE PREVIOUS DESIGNS

The gumming mechanism could not stick the paper

properly. The weight and size of machines were large, hence it was difficult to carry the machine from one place to another. The machines were not economical. The bags made were like a pouch; hence the bags cannot be used for carrying large volume of things.

b) c) d) e)

f)

Detail study of existing mechanisms. Exploration of all possible mechanism to achieve the objectives. Preparation of 3d model using Pro Engineer software. Model simulation of mechanism using simulation software Pro Engineer. Fabrication and assembly of the machine. Making the necessary changes in design i.e. refabrication.

OPERATIONS INVOLVED IN MAKING THE BAG

1. Folding the newspaper(standard size- 56cmx35cm) at certain distance from the edges along E1 and E2.

SCOPE OF FURTHER WORK

The machine can be run with solar energy or electrical energy, if a proper self-feeding mechanism for the newspaper and self-removing mechanism for the carry bag is developed. Also modifications can be made in the design of the machine such that machine can be operated only with foot, which will be more comfortable for the user of machine.
