What is Broadband?
Broadband indicates a means of connectivity at a high or broad bandwidth.
Band in Broadband ?
Band means Bandwidth
Bandwidth : The range of frequencies, expressed in hertz (Hz), that can pass over a given transmission channel. The bandwidth determines the rate at which information can be transmitted through the circuit. It is the amount of information transmitted in a given time.
In India Broad Band is defined as An always-on data connection supporting interactive services including Internet access and has the capability of the
minimum download speed of 256 kilo bits per second (kbps) to an individual subscriber from the Point Of Presence (POP) of the service provider. The interactive services will exclude any services for which a separate licence is specifically required, for example, real-time voice transmission, except to the extent that it is presently permitted under ISP licence with Internet Telephony.
Band
Dial-up vs Broadband
In Dial up,the maximum speed is 56 kbps It cannot be used for internet surfing &telephone call simultaneously We need to pay for local call every time we dial internet Modems are used to translate digital into analogue signal &for communicating with internet A connection with a download speed of 256 kbps or more is called Broadband
Dial-up vs Broadband
In broadband ,data is delivered through a number of means such as via cable ,satellite, more commonly through physical telephone line In broadband digital data is not converted into analogue & does not interfere with the use of line for voice transmission Broadband requires a special router or modem (ADSL modem) Broadband users need to use a firewall to keep the computer invisible to the outside
Broadband Technologies
Broadband Technologies Wireless
3G Mobile Wi-Fi (Wireless Fidelity) WiMAX LMDS & MMDS FSO (Free Space Optics) Satellite

DSL (Digital Sub s Line) Cable Modem Optical Fibre Technologies PLC (Power Line Communication)
Services.?
Always-on Internet
means that you are permanently connected to the internet, and don't need to dial up a connection every time you want to surf the web, send email, etc.
Video on Demand
enables the user to select from an online library of content and select any of the available choices for viewing at a convenient time. This is similar to borrowing a Video for viewing.
Video Multicasting
similar to cable or terrestrial broadcast the user can join at any time but the stream begins and ends at the preappointed times.
Interactive Gaming
enables multiple players to play online games pitted against each other or against computers, through gaming servers employed by gaming content providers.
Services.?
Audio and Video Conferencing
Share ideas, information, and applications using video or audio.
IP Telephony
telephony services enabled of phones for actual communications; related services such as billing and dialing plans; and by VoIP(phone calls over an IP data network),, including the interconnection basic features such as conferencing, transfer, forward, and hold.
Distance Learning
consist of electronic classrooms with 2-way and multi-way communication between teachers and students.
All these services require the service provider to have strong tie-ups with the various content providers. After all, what is hardware without usable software?
Broadband Target
1 Million by December 2005 Another 2 millions by December 2006 Another 3 millions by December 2007 Thus a Total of Six Millions by December 2007 To be Achieved Through NIB-II, Broadband Loop Carrier, Wi-Fi & Wi-Max, New Tender for five million Broadband Lines titled Broadband Multi Play
DSL Technology
DSL may offer more than 100 times the network performance of a traditional analog modem Precise speed of a connection depends upon the type of DSL employed DSL uses the same telephone line as traditional modem DSL remains always-on all the time Customer no longer need to physically dial up to the ISP to log in to the internet
ADSL
Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line Used for applications which require greater download bandwidth but require relatively little in opposite direction like Web browsing; File downloads An ADSL circuit connects an ADSL modem on each end of a twisted pair telephone line creating three information channels
A high speed downstream channel A medium speed duplex channel A basic telephone service channel
ADSL
The basic telephone service channel is split off from the digital modem by splitter at client site Allows simultaneous access to the line by the telephone and the computer In case of power/ADSL failure, data transmission is lost but basic telephone service will be operational Provides
Can work up to a distance of 3.7 to 5.5 kms depending upon the speed required
xDSL Modulation
Two types of modulation techniques are used in xDSL Technologies
DMT
Discrete multitone (DMT) is a method of separating a Digital Subscriber Line signal so that the usable frequency range is separated into 256 frequency bands of 4.3125 KHz each. Within each channel, modulation uses QAM. By varying the number of bits per symbol within a channel, the modem can be rateadaptive. Both G.DMT and G.lite use DMT

What is Data One? An always-on data connection Able to support interactive services including Internet access Simultaneous availability of Phone and Internet on the existing Telephone line Has the capability of the minimum download speed of 256 kilo bits per second (kbps)
DSL CPEs: At customer premises. On one end it connects telephone cable coming from exchange via splitter. At the other end, it connects to PC through Ethernet / USB Port. DSLAM: called as DSL Access Multiplexer. It has a built in splitter which splits voice and data. While voice follows the normal conventional path through exchange, data is aggregated and up linked through Ethernet Port (Gigabit Ethernet for 480 port and Fast Ethernet for lower DSLAM) LAN Switch: For aggregating multiple DSLAM and providing a common uplink to the core
SSSS: Called as Subscriber Service Selection System. When customer logs in he will be welcomed with this customized screen from where he can select various range of service. This provides on demand service without manual intervention
DSLAM
DSLAMs shall in general be collocated with existing PSTN exchanges which provide last mile access to customers over copper wire up to average span lengths of 3 kms Size of DSLAM vary considerably from 480 Ports , 240 ports, 120 Ports, 64 ports, 48 Ports and 24 ports.
