SAMPLE PROBLEM

A transport carrier can carry a maximum number of 25 vehicles ranging from motorcycles to cars. The total number of tyres that can be accommodated by the transport carrier is 70 excluding the transporter s tyres. Find the total number of motorcycles and cars that can be carried by the transporter?

1st strategy that we use is the Sketching Strategy.

SOLVE IT Before we add 2 more tyres to make the number of tyres become 70: OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO O O OO OO OO

After we add 2 more tyres to make the number of tyres become 70: OOOO OOOO OOOO OOOO OOOO OOOO OOOO OOOO OOOO OOOO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO Sign: OOOO Car OO - Motorcycle

From this sketches, we can see how much number of motorcycles and cars that can be fit into the transporter. There are 15 motorcycles and 10 cars in the transporter.

2nd strategy that I would propose to answer this question is Making a Table and Guess and Check strategy.

SOLVE IT Firstly, we make a table with 5 rows and 3 columns. Then, we choose our target. For example, in the transporter have 6 cars and 19 motorcycles. So we can see the total of vehicles in the transporter is 62 vehicles. Then, we try and error with the same ratio until we get the answer which is 15 motorcycles and 10 cars:

CARS ( 4 TYRES)

MOTORCYCLES (2 TYRES)

TOTAL OF VEHICLES (70 TYRES)

6 7 8 9 10

19 18 17 16 15

62 64 66 68 70

Calculation: 1 car has 4 tyres. 1 motorcycle has 2 tyres. So, if there has 6 cars and 19 motorcycles... 6 x 4 = 24 and 19 x 2 = 38 And the total of vehicles are 62= (24+38). But, the answer is wrong. So, we try and error with the same ratio until we get the correct answer which is 10 cars and 15 motocycles: 10 x 4 = 40 and 15 x 2 = 30. The total of vehicles are 70 (40 + 30). The answer is correct.

CREATED PROBLEM

Old McDonald had a farm. On his farm he had 30 animals ranging from cows, goats, chickens and ducks. There are 20 cows and goats and 10 chicken and duck..He owns a truck that can carry a total number of 60 animals feet. What is the total number of animals that can be carried by the truck if there are 12 animals left in the farm? Note that there are one couple each left for duck and chicken and the number of cows left is equal to the number of goats left.

SOLVE IT Firstly, we need to do a table. Draw 5 columns and 5 rows. After that we try to guess certain number to be put inside the boxes. Don t forget that chicken and duck leave each one a pair at the farm. After done guessing and checking, we will get the possible answer which is 18 animals 6 for each cows and goats and 3 for each chickens and ducks.

COWS ( 4 feet )

GOATS ( 4 feet )

DUCKS ( 2 feet )

CHICKENS ( 2 feet )

TOTAL ANIMAL (60 feets)

8 8 7 7 6

8 8 7 7 6

3 4 3 4 3

3 4 3 4 3

76 80 68 72 60

Calculation: 1 cow and goat has 4 feet. 1 duck and chicken has 2 feet. So, if there are 8 cow and 8 goat with 3 chicken and 3 duck. The answer will be: (8x4) + (8x4) + (3x2) + (3x2) = 76 So the answer is wrong it is supposed to be 60. Keep on trying until you get the correct answer which is: 6 cow and 6 goat with 3 chicken and 3 duck. (6x4) + (6x4) + (3x2) + (3x2) = 60. The answer is correct.
