What is Late French Immersion (LFI)?


Canadian made education program that began over 30 years ago. In Richmond since 1986. Designed for students whose first language is NOT French. Begins in Grade 6. All subjects are taught in French except Band. English Language Arts is reintroduced in Grade 7 Students may continue in the French Immersion High Schools (McRoberts or McMath).

Who makes a good candidate ?


Students who are:
motivated to work hard willing to take risks comfortable and enjoy working in groups eager to learn another language able to manage time and organize work able to persevere when the work gets challenging

How is French Taught?


Emphasis is on obtaining French vocabulary. Strategies such as games, repetition, group work, gesturing, word association etc. are used. French/English dictionary is essential as well as verb books and erasers! Music, books, videos, plays, concerts are additional tools used to obtain the language.

How can parents support their child?


Encouragement in their studies, ask specific questions about their homework. Encourage them to continue to read in English. Provide access to resources: French/English dictionary, verb book, internet, library. Involve your child in the decision to enter the program. Continue to help with curriculum content and seek help with the French. Show positive attitude towards language and culture.

How do I Apply?
Applications will begin on January 16, 2012 Pick up an Alternate Program Application Form from your current school Submit application to the Richmond School Board, 7811 Granville Avenue, 1st Floor, by Friday, February 3, 2012 at 4:00 p.m. Draw date: Wednesday, February 8, 2012 Applicants will be informed of draw results by February 15, 2012

Things to Note:
LFI is offered at 3 schools in Richmond: Whiteside, Diefenbaker and McNeely Transportation is the parents responsibility Acceptance into the school of choice is on a lottery basis.

Sibling Priority
Priority will be given to a child who has a sibling in the immersion program in the same school at the same time and there is space. If there are more sibling applicants than spaces, there will be a separate draw in that school. Siblings of students enroled in the English program are not given sibling priority in LFI.
