TRANSFORMER OIL USED IN LOCO

SPECIAL MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS NO RDSO/ELRS/SMI/120 MAINTENACNE OF MAIN TRANSFORMER OIL IN SERVICE

Railways have reported rapid deterioration of transformer oil conforming to IS 335-1983 in service due to sharp increase in acidity of indigenous transformer oil on account of oxidation. it is also noticed that there is a sharp increase in the acidity level of the oil in service after it attains an acidity level of 0.3 mg KOH/gm.

AOH/IOH
In case the dielectric strength is less than 50KV, the oil may be Filtered/recycled. If the acidity is observed to be more than 0.5 mg KOH/gm but less than 1.0 mg/KOH/gm, the same is to be kept under observation. In case of acidity exceeding 1.0 mg KOH/gm the oil is to be discarded.

POH
During POH the old transformer oil should be replaced with new oil pressured as per IS 335-1983 The transformer oil is to be procured only from one of the following RDSO approved suppliers

i) M/s Savita Chemicals Private Limited 6th floor, 766-767, Nariman Bhavan Bombay 400021. ii) M/s Madras petro chemicals Limited, Manali, Madras 600063. iii) M/s Apar private Limited, (special oil refinery) Mohal, Trombay. Bombay 400074

SPECIAL MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS NO RDSO/ELRS/SMI/121 REVISED CHARACTERISTICS FOR NEW INSULATING OIL FOR LOCOMOTIV/EMU TRANSFORMER AND ADDITIONAL TESTS FOR MAINTENACE OF OIL IN SERVICE. Railways have reported rapid deterioration of transformer oil conforming to IS: 335-1983 in service due to sharp increase in acidity of the indigenous transformer oil on account of oxidation since the indigenous oil made from transformer oil base stock (TOBS) with paraffine base material, the same has less oxidation stability as compared to the imported transformer oil made from TOBS having base material as Napthalene. In view of this, it has been decided that the characteristics of the new Insulating oil for locomotive/EMU transformers be revised and additional tests conducted to monitor the condition of oil in service.

SPECIAL MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS NO RDSO/ELRS/SMI/121 REVISED CHARACTERISTICS FOR NEW INSULATING OIL FOR LOCOMOTIV/EMU TRANSFORMER AND ADDITIONAL TESTS FOR MAINTENACE OF OIL IN SERVICE. New insulating oil for locomotive/EMU transformers shall conform to the characteristics of EHV grade oil. The specification requirements for EHV grade oil are enclosed.

I. PPROCUREMENT SPECIFICATION FOR INSULATING OIL For loco and EMU transformers only. II. CONDITION MONITORING OF INSULATING OIL. Transformer oil shall be procured to the following description:New insulating oils for transformers and Switchgear complying with IS:335 -83, except that in regard to the following parameters the oil should have better characteristics than those specified is IS:335 .

CODE OF PRACTICE FOR MAINTENANCE OF TRANSFORMER OIL IN SERVICE

Varying practices are being followed by Railways for maintenance of transformer oil in service. Also. the oil in the locomotive transformer is being replaced during POH irrespective of whether the condition permit its use for some more time. In order to ensure optimum utilisation of the transformer oil. it is necessary to monitor its condition periodically and replace it only when further treatment by way of filteration does not restore its characteristics within permissible limits. SPECIAL MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS NO RDSO/ELRS/SMI/159 USE OF INHIBITED TRANSFORMER OIL TO IS: 12463 IN ELECTRIC LOCO AND EMU TRANSFORMER EHV grade insulation oil conforming to IS: 335-1983 with the latest ammendments is at present being used on IR system. The useful service life of this oil is only about 5 to 6 years requiring replacement due to sludge formation and increased acidity. in USA and certain European countries, use of inhibitors is reported to have prelonged the service life of transformer oil.

SPECIAL MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS NO RDSO/ELRS/SMI/159 USE OF INHIBITED TRANSFORMER OIL TO IS: 12463 IN ELECTRIC LOCO AND EMU TRANSFORMER The transformer core-coil assembly shall be taken out and the corecoil assembly along with the tank should be cleaned to remove the sludge completely however the active part should be preheated by low voltage short circuit running before the core coil assembly is taken out. After re- tanking of the core- coil assembly, 0.3% max. inhibited oil procured to IS: 12463-1988 with latest ammendaments should be filled in. The BDV, acidity and inhibitor content of this oil should be measured and recorded before filling SMI 159

MINERAL OIL
mineral oil is any of various colorless, odorless, light mixtures of alkanes in the C15 to C40 range from a non-vegetable (mineral) source, particularly a distillate of petroleum. Most often, mineral oil is a liquid by-product of the distillation of petroleum to produce gasoline and other petroleum-based products from crude oil. A mineral oil in this sense is a transparent, colorless oil composed mainly of alkanes]and cyclic paraffins, related to petroleum jelly (also known as "white petrolatum"). It has a density of around 0.8 g/cm3. Mineral oil is a substance of relatively low value, and it is produced in very large quantities. Mineral oil is available in light and heavy grades. There are three basic classes of refined mineral oils: paraffinic oils, based on n-alkanes naphthenic oils, based on cycloalkanes aromatic oils, based on aromatic hydrocarbons
