Concerns
n Educational and research activities
should be motivated or seen to be
motivated by pursuit of knowledge, not
financial reward
n Such commercial activities should protect
basic values such as freedom and
openness of inquiry
n Exclusive agreements or agreements
which involve equity in outside entities or
vice versa raise special concerns
n Educational activities should be free from
intrusive commercial aspects
Problems
n A team has marketable product but

(i) IPR not resolved
(ii) small market or modest
demand
(iii) wait-and-see approach from
clients
(iv) trade secret
(v) no clear niche yet
Technology Transfer
n Annual seminars and exhibitions
n Website promotion of available
technologies
n Seek commercialisation partners through
industry contacts
n Leasing of prototype plants by tenders
(allowing for venture capital type of
investment)
n Industry wants viable business,
researchers provide only raw
technologies :::::: mismatch
Issues on Technology
n Clarity in IPR ownership
n How much say should an investor have?
n Clear and simple technology transfer
mechanisms (from univ to client)
n Flexibility in staff deployment and
assignment
n Clear and publicised incentive policy for
staff
n Who should be the main beneficiary from
the income generated (University? Or
Researchers?)
What’s Your Role?
n Take the view that every small
input goes a long way if the
research output is made known to
others.
n Conduct research for own need
n Conduct research for researchers
n Participate and present papers in
seminars
n Publish or assist in publishing
