GE-PON BASED BROADBAND PROVISIONING SYSTEM [FIBER TO THE HOME]

Presented by:
Anto Mathew Midhun M.S Jyothis Joy Joseph Chacko

Access Technologies
Copper Cable Coaxial cable Fiber (PON and coarse WDM [CWDM])

Why Optical Access?

y High Speed, up to 2.4 Gbps. y Covers long distance, upto 20 Kms. y Supports triple plays plus RF

overlay.

Why FTTH? FTTH offers enormous band width, enable triple play services with data.

Residential Services: High-definition video on demand. Differentiated high-speed internet access. Advanced telephony features. Range of speed: 155Mbps -2.5Gbps Downstream(n/w to user) 155Mbps -1Gbps Upstream(user to n/w)

TYPES OF FTTH

FTTH ARCHITECTURE
y Active (point 2 point) y Passive(point 2 multipoint)

GEPON Technology
GEPON uses Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM)Technology. Downstream Wavelength: 1490nm. 1550nm is optional downstream for Video broadcast. Upstream Wavelength: 1310nm.

Network Elements of PON

OLT Splitters ONU/ONT Fiber

ARCHITECHTURE - INTERNAL

Benefits of PON Technology

y Unlimited Band width y No consumption of energy y Low cost of upgrade and operating expenditures y Reduced cable cost, as it enables sharing of each fiber

by many users y High quality of service

Disadvantages of existing technology

y Less no. of consumers can be satisfied y BW is comparatively low y High SNR y Low data rate y Only 2 wavelengths are used y Speed 1Gbps y Max distance limit 20km

Plan of Work
y Hardware implementation: y Link length enhancement(link design and y y y y y y

optimization) Possibility of more no. of wavelengths Max no. of connections possible Double splitting Effect of double splitting on BW Insertion of rare-earth doped ampr to enhance link length Whether special fibers are employed to increase the reach

y Dynamic range optimization for increasing the y y y y y y y

Responsivity Integrating wi fi at customer premises SNR calculation Channel allocation Link power budget calculation Main focus is to have more BW, datarate at the last mile Comparison with Optsim simulation software results Simulating same with Matlab simulink

Applications
y Distance Learning y Telemedicine y Tele working y Peer to peer file sharing y Distributed computing y Online Gaming y HDTV y Home Monitoring and home automation.
