ABOUT INDIAN OIL


y Indian Oil Corporation Limited, or Indian Oil, is an Indian state owned y y

oil and gas company headquartered at Mumbai, India. It is only indian company in FORTUNE s global 500 list, ranked 125 in 2010. Indian Oil and its subsidiaries account for a 46% share in the petroleum products market, 34.8% share in refining capacity and 67% downstream sector pipelines capacity in India. It has also started Auto LPG Dispensing Stations (ALDS). It supplies Indane cooking gas to over 47.5 million households through a network of 4,990 Indian distributors. It owns and operates the country s largest network of cross-country crude and product pipelines, with a combined length of 7,730 km with a combined capacity of 56.85MMTPA.

BARAUNI REFINERY
y Barauni Refinery was built in collaboration with Russia and Romania IN 1964. y The refinery receives crude oil by pipeline from Paradip on the east coast via Haldia. y Its capacity is 6 MMTPA.

ATMOSPHERIC AND VACCUM DISTILLATION UNIT


y The ADU (Atmospheric Distillation Unit) separates most of the lighter

end products such as gas, gasoline, naphtha, kerosene, and gas oil from the crude oil. y The bottoms of the ADU are then sent to the VDU (Vacuum Distillation Unit).

FLUID CATALYTIC CRACKING UNIT


y In the newer designs for Fluid Catalytic Cracking Unit, cracking takes

place using a very active zeolite-based catalyst in a short-contact time vertical or upward sloped pipe called the "riser . y The ho t catalyst vapourizes the feed and catalyzes the cracking reactions that break down the high molecular weight oil into lighter components including LPG, gasoline, and diesel. y The present processing capacity of the unit is about 1.48 MMT/Yr.

DIESEL HYDRO DESULPHURIZATION UNIT


y DHDS (Diesel hydro desulphurization unit) is set up for the

followingpurposes: 1. A step towards pollution control. 2. To produce low sulphur diesel (0.25 w/w %) as per govt. directive w.e.f. Oct. 1990.
y The Hydrodesulphurization reaction releases H2S in gaseous

hydrocarboneffluents. This H2S removal is achieved by means of a continuous absorptionprocess using a 25% wt. DEA solution.

SULPHUR RECOVERY UNIT


y The unit consists of three identical units A, B and C. One of them is

kept standby. y The process design is in accordance with common practice to recover elemental sulfur known as the Clause process, which is further improved by Super Clause. y Each unit consists of a thermal stage, inwhich H2S is partially burnt with air, followed by two catalytic stagesse process.
y Acatalytic incinerator for incineration of all gases has been

incorporated inorder to prevent pollution of the atmosphere.

SUPERHEATER
y A superheater is a device used to convert saturated steam or wet steam

into dry steam used for power generation or processes.

Turbine
y There are 5 turbines in TPS . Three steam turbine and two gas turbine. y A steam turbine is a mechanical device that extracts thermal energy from pressurized steam , and converts it into rotary motion. y A gas turbine, also called a combustion turbine, is a type of internal combustion engine . It has an upstream rotating compressor coupled to a downstream turbine , and a combustion chamber in-between.

DEAERATOR
A deaerator is a device that is widely used for the removal of air and other dissolved gases from the feedwater to steam-generating boilers.

DEMINERALLISATION PLANT
y Demineralisation is the process of removing the mineral salts

from water by ion-exchange. Impurities that remains dissolved in water dissociate to form positive and negative charged particles known as ions. These impurities or compounds are called electrolytes. Generally, all natural water has electrolytes in varying concentrations. An ion-exchange vessel holds ionexchange resin of the required type through which water is allowed to pass. The selective ions in the water are exchanged with ions or radicals loosely held by the resin. In this way, the water is passed through several vessels or a mixed bed vessel so that both positive and negative ions are removed and water is demineralised.

y A pump is a device used to move fluids, such as liquids , gases or slurries. y A centrifugal pump is a rotodynamic pump that uses a rotating impeller to create flow by the addition of energy to a fluid.
