Safety in use: breaking capacity tests simulate those encountered in "real life"

Prospective short circuit current (Isc) & ultimate short circuit breaking capacity (Icu) when designing an installation, the worst case of short circuit current is calculated : we call this the "prospective short circuit current". prospective Isc: theoretical three phase short circuit at the terminals of the circuit breaker "bolted" short circuit (without arc and impedance) the circuit breaker must be capable of interrupting this short circuit (a fault very unlikely to occur except during commissioning). ultimate short circuit breaking capacity (Icu): maximum short circuit current that the breaker can interrupt. is the only short circuit breaking capacity that needs to be considered when selecting a breaker.

Standard IEC 60947-2

Safety in use: breaking capacity tests simulate those encountered in "real life"

prospective short circuit level (Isc) & service breaking capacity (Ics) in practice, short circuit currents are much lower than the calculated prospective short circuit level because they are strongly limited by : the impedance of cables and connections the electric arc (within the breaker) its type : phase-neutral or between two phase. reduced short circuits are more probable as they are generally some distance away from the transformer.
