Literary Terms for Tri 2

Foreshadow
y The use of clues or hints to suggest events that will

occur later in the plot.

y Example from Where the Red Fern Grows:  Although the old hound had no way of knowing it, he had stirred memories, and what priceless treasures they wereof unselfish devotion, and death in its saddest form.

Mood
y The overall emotion created by a work of literature.  Example from The Raven, by Edgar Allen Poe:

Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered weak and weary, Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore, While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping, As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door. `'Tis some visitor,' I muttered, `tapping at my chamber door Only this, and nothing more.' Ah, distinctly I remember it was in the bleak December, And each separate dying ember wrought its ghost upon the floor. Eagerly I wished the morrow; - vainly I had sought to borrow From my books surcease of sorrow - sorrow for the lost Lenore For the rare and radiant maiden whom the angels named Lenore Nameless here for evermore.

Tone
y The attitude that a writer takes toward his or her

subject, characters, and audience.



Authors use tone to create the type of mood that they want for their piece of literature. Examples of sarcastic tone from Catcher in the Rye:
are always trying to find out if you're Catholic. "If a girl looks swell when she meets you, who gives a d*@^ if she's late? Nobody. "People never believe you. "All morons hate it when you call them a moron."

Irony
y A contrast between expectation and reality:
  

 

If Einstein (the mathematician) failed a math test. If it rains on your wedding day. If on the ONE day you need to make a withdrawal from the bank, they are closed. If a doctor dies from a heart attack. If the plumbers wife never gets him to fix the leaky faucet.

Simile
y A comparison between two things, using the words

like, as, than, or resembles.

y Example:  Her voice is as sweet as a bell.  He is like a machine, hes so strong!  Its like a freezer in here! Brrrrrr y Example from Mother and Daughter: The dye was falling from her dress like black tears.

Metaphor
y An imaginative comparison between two things in

which one thing is said to be another thing.

  

He is a monster! He needs to learn to control his temper. Dont be such a silly goose! That woman at the store was a helicopter, the way she hovered around us the whole time!

Internal Conflict
y A struggle that takes place within a characters own

mind. It is a struggle between opposing needs, desires, choices, or emotions.



Example from The Outsiders:

The struggle of

Johnny and Ponyboy of whether or not they should turn themselves in.

External Conflict
y A struggle that occurs between characters or between

a character and a larger force, such as nature or society.



(Man vs Man, Man vs Nature, Man vs Society)

Example from The Outsiders:

Physical

struggle between the social classes: Greasers vs. Socs

Personification
y A figure of speech in which a non-human or non-

living thing orquality is described as if it were human/alive.



Examples:
The wind

howled angrily around the house! The candle flame danced in the darkness The chair hugged me as I sank into it. Her love will die.

Symbolism
y Using a person, place, thing, or event that has

meaning in itself to stand for something beyond itself as well



Examples:
Dove represents peace Apple represents original Heart represents love Cross represents Christian Rain
