Ursus thibetanus (a.k.a moon bear, tibetan black bear, himalayan black bear, asian black bear)

Facts
Appearance
Round heads, long ears

Crescent shaped mark on chest

Pale brown muzzles

Stocky body

Length: 190 cm (maximum) Weight: 50-125kg (females), 100-200kg (males)

Long shaggy black fur

Where would you find them?

Way of Life
Diet:
-fruits & berries -seeds -small animals -shellfish
Cubs stay with their mother for 1-2 years- they are mostly solitary
They spend about half their time in trees (or climbing

Why are they endangered?


-Threat to farm animals -Bile (a dark fluid produced in the gall bladder) is used in traditional Chinese medicine. Its painful for the bear when traders extract it.

Crush cages that are used to keep the bears in place when extracting the bile.

Changes over time:


Population declined after increase in bile trade, and some died of habitat destruction

listed the Moon/Asiatic Black Bear in the vulnerable category (Red List 2002) Worldwide population: 16,000-50,000 (in the wild)

Rescuing bile bears Jill Robinson set up sanctuaries in China, and is a part of the Animals Asia Foundation
