States cannot control their economies The world economy is more independent than ever, with trade and finances ever expanding

2. Communications revolutionized the way we deal with the rest of the world:

Events in one part of the world can immediately affect the other side of the world Electronic communications alter our notions of the social groups we work and live in

1. There is a global culture:

Most urban areas resemble one another The world shares a common culture (much resemble

one of America)

2. The world is becoming more homogeneous: differences between people peoples are diminishing 3. Time and space seem to be collapsing:
Ideas of geographical space and chronological time are

undermined by the speed of modern communications and media

Transnational social and political movements
Transfer of allegiance from the state to sub-state,

transnational, and international bodies

5. A cosmopolitan culture: people begin to think globally and act locally 6. A risk culture: people realize that the main risks that face them are global and that states are unable to deal with the problems Main opinions about globalization:
It is a new stage in world politics (states are becoming

less important) It is progressive It improves the lives of people

ARGUMENTS AGAINST GLOBALIZATION

1. National governments seem to be powerless in the face of global trends. Hence, the theory seem to make globalization more unique than it really is (history) 2. Effects of globalization are uneven: it is strong in one part of the world but weak in others. 3. It is the latest stage of Western Imperialism: no voice of non-Western values in the global world, globalization is the triumph of Western world view 4. It is exploitative: less developed countries are forced to open their economy whereas all conditions (technologies, policies, rules, etc.) benefit the richest countries, allowing their interests to override marginalized countries ones 5. Not all globalizing forces are good (e.g. drug cartels and terrorists): states are essential in raising censorship and preventing access to certain kinds of materials

Main opinions about globalization:

It is not something new in the history It does not necessarily bring about progresses to all

peoples and their is inequality in distributing its benefits It over undermines the role of states
