Design for manufacture (DFM)

DFM effort is to modify the existing products (and/or its components) design or have a new product designed. It processes to manufacture the same are easier quicker and/or less expensive.

Reducing the manufacturing time is a major consideration. This, of course, has to be achieved without compromising on quality. It was Eli Whitney, who developed a system of DFM 200 years ago for manufacturing muskets.

Various aspects in product design

Design for function. Design for making. Design for selling.

Design for function

A product must perform the function which its customer expects it to do. If a product is designed by taking its functional features into account, then it will create satisfied customers.

Design for Making

A product design that solves the functional problem smoothly, then attention must be given to materials, fastening devices etc., While designing a product . Also, operational convenience of the machineries must be taken into account at the design stage.

Design for selling

A product that functions well and is easy to make, but is wanted by no one is of no avail. The features like, appearance and convenience, depending on the customers, needs are to be considered.

Over the Wall Syndrome

Product designers believe that their job is over once they release their drawings. Manufacturing engineers then struggle to produce the product that is dumped into their laps. At their best, design and development people have been more concerned with how a particular feature requested by marketing may be translated into a physical parameter.

Product design for quality

Functionality Esthetic/ Visual appeal Safety standards Ease to use Product performance

Functionality: - What purpose that product serve? - Some products has excellent use, but lost customer appeal due to poor design.

Esthetic/ Visual appeal: - Purchase design is mostly based on visual appeal. - Many poor functioning products have been sold largely due to their strong visual appeal. - Design consideration need to be given importance to esthetic/ visual appeal.

Safety Standards: - Product safety is important when reviewing design. - Use of materials that are non toxic, nondamageble to environment.

Ease to use: - Designing must ensure that easy to use. - Simplicity makes the thing easy.

Product performance: - During designing process product performance must be considered. - Performance here is defined as how long a product lasts in its use, ensuring component does not break.

Product design for environment

DFD design for disassembly; take back law Product should make no use of environmental damaging substances. Design facilitates manufacture of products with little use of natural resources like water and energy. The design is such that the product doesnt end up soon.

Design in such a way that the nonreusable and recyclable are used. Durable it can be repaired and reused.. Products that can be disposed of safely.
