Federers legendary 65 match win streak on grass and a record-breaking sixth consecutive Wimbledon title was on the line. Two rain delays, sky-high level of play, lost match points (Nadal had two in the fourth set breaker) Impending darkness amidst tennis own version of overtime (there are no final set tiebreakers at Wimbledon). The score reached 5-5, then 6-6, then 7-7-the tension unbearable before Nadal prevailed 9-7 under shroud of darkness.

Off Court Friends

They are good friends off the court, and both men possess true sportsmanship, true respect for one another. Both will always acknowledge each others efforts with genuine sincerity.

May 2007, Federer agreed to play in an exhibition game against Nadal in Majorca, the latters place of residence. It was called the Battle of Surfaces, where they played in a hybrid court, half clay (preferred by Nadal, and half grass, preferred by Federer). Nadal won that match.

Also, in the August 2008 issue of Sports Illustrated, where they both appeared on the cover, Nadal named Federer as one of his 3 favourite sportsmen.
