Hazardous Waste

Proposed National Agenda Initiatives Hazardous Waste Management

Proposed National Agenda Initiatives for Management of Hazardous Waste

Storage

Collection

Use collection and transfer stations as storage facilities for hazardous waste
Collection of industrial hazardous waste should be made at source by a
collection vehicle combined with the establishment of waste depots and
transfer stations
Local waste depots are also suitable for collection of hazardous waste from
small-scale industries and households

Disposal

A central treatment facility should be established, including:

Temporary and long term hazardous waste storage facilities
Pre-treatment plant for oil waste
Wet chemical treatment plant for inorganic liquid waste

Management

Proposed National Agenda Initiatives for Regulatory Support for Management of Hazardous Waste

Regulation

Enforcement

Establish and strengthen national legislation for the sound

management of hazardous waste including adequate legislation and
capacity for rehabilitation of contaminated sites and for responding to
emergencies
Promote the development of control procedures for the trans-
boundary movement of hazardous wastes
Adopt appropriate coordinating, legislative and regulatory measures
at the national level for the sound management of hazardous wastes
Develop clear guidelines for the identification of hazardous waste
Modify standards in order to promote the use of recycled materials
that are environmentally sound
