The General Impact of Materials Used in Buildings

features of the building affected by the material selection?

What

Environmental Effects

With the beginning of environmental sensitivity movement, green building concept was born. The concept of green or sustainable building began with the environmental pollution and the energy crisis (especially fossil fuel and oil crisis) fear in the 1970's. The sustainable building movement and development based on the need for more energy efficiency and environmentally sensitive constructions.

Building materials typically considered to be 'green'

lumber from forests, rapidly renewable plant materials like bamboo and straw insulating concrete forms dimension stone recycled stone recycled metal and other products that are non-toxic, reusable, renewable, and/or recyclable (e.g., Trass, Linoleum, sheep wool, panels made from paper flakes, compressed earth block, adobe, baked earth etc. ) .

Durability

With the correct choice of materials, buildings can be constructed of adequate strength. The basic construction material of buildings, cement, should be chosen carefully. Besides the cement, auxiliary materials, such as steels and filling materials, are also important in construction. Depending on the type of steel used, resistance to pressure varies.

If Material Selection is not Done Properly

Economic Aspect

Construction projects can suffer from financial problems. Underbids ask for too little money to complete the project. Cash flow problems exist when the present amount of funding can not cover the current costs for labour and materials. When the portions of a project are completed, while the logistical requirements of having the right trades and materials Mistakes and major economical damages can be prevented.

In Conclusion

Buildings should be contructed by thinking two main areas; architectural design and material selection, that contains economy, environment, ergonomy and durability . With choosing proper materials, buildings can be more sensitive to environment, economic, sustainable and durable. Besides, ergonomy, environmental sensitivity and cost-effect of building are developed with good architectural design.
