Our sole aim was to do a case study on the working of a content management system using research methodology and in-depth investigation(Survey-based). case study focuses on how many people are aware and are using any type of web CMS' for the creation of their websites.

INTRODUCTION
W hat Is CMS?
Content
Management System software is a tool to manage the website the way we want to manage it. It is used to manage and control a large, dynamic collection of Web material. A WCMS facilitates content creation, content control, editing, and essential Web maintenance functions. Web CMS provide templates and forms to make it easy to add and update content on the site. The software provides tools designed to allow users with little or no knowledge of web programming languages.

PRELIMINARY INVESTIGATION

or Content Management System is a software that resides on a server. It replaces web pages as means of displaying a website. The pages do not exist as such, and instead are created from a database on-the-fly, by the CMS software. The CMS will normally use database of some kind to store the page text in. With minimal training, the site owner may be able to add new menu items and even sections to the site. Page design is based on templates so that content is separated from design and each does not affect the other. Additional website functions and features are added by means of plug-ins.

The visitor's browser requests a page from the server. v The CMS builds the page: it gets the publishing parameters and the text from the database, then graphics, images and other components from the relevant folders, builds the page, and passes it to the server. v The server passes the page along to the browser. v All the above steps takes very little time approximately 0.25 of a second.

various departments of Himachal Pradesh University viz. Arts Department, Science Department and the Universitys main library. Survey questions varied from general awareness to more CMS specific. Survey was conducted on teachers, students from the various departments as well as the academic and the administrative staff. Our survey was narrowed down to UIIT. Conclusions were drawn based on their responses in forms of various Graphical Tools such as Pie charts and Bar graphs

QUESTIONNAIRES
We classified our questionnaire into following categories : General Survey Questions were asked about general internet awareness and whether they knew how a web page was created. Specific Survey - Questions were asked whether they had created web pages through web programming languages or CMS. More Specific - Questions were asked if they had used OpenSource or proprietary softwares for their websites and the complexities they had encountered while using the same. Very Specific - Questions were asked about the particular CMS(JOOMLA!) i.e. its features, extensions, shortcomings and their suggestions for improvement.

Interviewed various people in UIIT (students & teachers) who had used CMS. Asked the following questions:
The
best features of the CMS they had used. The difficulties encountered while using it. Its shortcomings and loopholes. Why did they prefer JOOMLA! over others. Their suggestions for any improvements.

on the responses it was found that out of the 50 people we had surveyed 99% had used the internet for various purposes.

Out of the 30 people from the 50 people surveyed earlier 40% of the people were aware of what a CMS was and 11 out of 12 people were from UIIT.

JOOMLA! : INTRODUCTION
Joomla!
is an open source content management system platform for publishing content on the World Wide Web and intranets It is written in PHP, stores data in MySQL and includes features such as printable versions of pages, news flashes, blogs, polls, search,etc. As stated earlier it requires no knowledge of programming.

Usability testing is a technique used to evaluate a product by testing it on users. The feedback of the usability testing of JOOMLA! CMS were given by the people of UIIT,who had been working on it for a long time. Their feedback included: Advantages of JOOMLA! Best features in it. Shortcomings

and Open Source. Plug-ins - Easily customizable extensions available for you to use, depending on what your site needs are overall. There are over 4,000 different types of extensions. Modules - These small applications will add greater functionality and bring richer content to a site. A module may add a PayPal button on your site for payments, bring applications updates from Twitter, or bring Flash content to your site. Joomla Community - One will not feel alone while using JOOMLA! because there are many Joomla forum communities all over the web for help and support.

CONCLUSION
Content
management systems have revolutionized the way websites are created and managed. They are extremely user friendly, do not demand high level of technical skills. CMS ( eg. JOOMLA!) have tools that help users update and modify website content easily and with minimum effort as contents update is easier than traditional methods . Plenty of options are available for free of cost eg. JOOMLA! open-source CMS.
