Introduction
The DTS-i engine is the most successful engine ever produced by an Indian manufacturer. It is nothing but having two spark plugs instead of one in a cylinder. The ignition timings are controlled electronically and these sparks are made at different strokes to minimize the fuel waste. Both plugs have the same heat range and fire at the same moment. A throttle actuated ignition-control system works hand-in-glove with a chipcontrolled digital capacitor discharge ignition (CDI) system for accurate ignition timing under conditions
SPARK IGNITION
The term spark-ignition engine normally refers to internal combustion engines, specifically petrol engines, where the initiation of the combustion process of the air-fuel mixture is ignited within the combustion chamber by a spark from a spark plug. The term contrasts with diesel-fueled compression ignition engines, here the heat generated from compression is enough to initiate the combustion process.
DTS-i System
In the DTS-i engine two spark plugs are located in the cylinder head combustion
DTS-i In Action
Idle speed Here both the spark plugs ignite simultaneously, piston reaches the top
dead centre or the highest point. When we start the engine during the idle rpm and
slow running with certain rotation of the throttle ignition timing is 10degrees before TDC, which activates 1st ignition map. Medium and high speed - Both the spark plugs ignite at the same time earlier than that of the idling. Ignition timing between the idling and upto 2000rpm remains 10 degrees before TDC. From 2000rpm onwards, the ignition timing advances and reaches 32degrees before TDC.The ignition timing suddenly drops with respect to
the rpm and then steadily advances with respect to the throttle position and
reaches 32degrees before TDC at 10000rpm,and thus second ignition map is switched on.
3.
Twin spark plugs ensure faster and cleaner and more efficient
combustion.
4. 5.
Better power, throttle response and pick up at all speeds. Makes engine smaller and lighter.
Performance
The table below, shows the performance of the DTS-i engine in comparison to the simple engine. It is seen that the power and the torque has increased.
mixture.
2. Twin ignition tends to eliminate cycle to cycle variations in cylinder pressure, Particularly at light load conditions, which helps to reduce
CONCLUSION
The DTS-i helps the 150 cc and the 180 cc motorcycles to meet the India 2005 emission norms without the use of secondary air injection and catalytic convertor.
The DTS-i engine delivers good performance, fuel economy and drivability
to the customer.
