Abstract
an activation method for Indonesian Natural Zeolite Clinoptilolite with high CaO impurities has been developed in order to produce higher valueadded synthetic zeolite NaA. This method is based on the combination of ion removal and alkali digestion process.

This method was capable to reduce SiO2/Al2O3 ratio and CaO content of zeolite from 8.21 to 1.93 and from 5.81% to 2.16%, respectively.

Geologically, Indonesia has large potential reserves of natural zeolites because it lies within the volcanic sequence. Recently, some geologists have explored the zeolite mineral in Indonesia which is spread over 50 regions with potential deposit of 16.6 million tons. The impurities contained in synthesized zeolites and homogeneous product remained a problem to be overcome in the natural zeolites synthesize process. The aim of this study is to develop a synthesis method of low-grade clinoptilolite natural zeolite with high impurities to produce synthesized zeolites which has quality similar to zeolites NaA by reduced CaO impurities and modified the framework structure based on SiO2/Al2O3 ratio.

1. Introduction

2.Experimental
2.1.Materials Low-grade clinoptilolite natural zeolite from Bandung of Indonesia was used.

From this result shows that the main impurities is CaO (5.81%). Meanwhile, the CaO content of commercial synthetic zeolite is only about 2%.

2.2.Experimental Apparatus The apparatus used in this study consists of 100 ml reactor equipped with stirrer, heater, and thermocouple.

The final product was characterized using X-ray Diffraction (Philips XPert MPD) for phase crystallinity, X-ray fluorescence (PanAlytical PW 4030 X-Ray Spectrometer) for chemical composition, Scanning Electronic Microscope (Zeiss EVO MA-10) for particle morphology. Page 5

Synthesizing Process Was Employed by Mixing Zeolite Obtained From Preceding Process

The CaO content in natural zeolite decreased significantly after activation process as shown in Table 2 revealing that the ion removal process method developed in this study was successfully employed in reducing process of CaO content in natural zeolites

3. Results and Discussion

The comparison of natural zeolite, synthesized zeolite (sample Z9) and commercial synthetic zeolite composition are shown in Table 3. Based on XRF analysis, synthesized zeolite (sample Z9) has similar composition with commercial synthetic zeolite. There is different content in K2O, SiO2, and Al2O3 observed between sample Z9 obtained from this study and commercial synthetic zeolite, but the ratio of SiO2/Al2O3 is similar with synthetic commercial zeolite.

3. Results and Discussion

4. Conclusion A new method for the activation process of natural zeolites with high impurities, combining ion removal process and alkali digestion process, was developed successfully. This process is capable to convert clinoptilolite with SiO2/Al2O3 ratio of 8.21 to zeolite NaA with SiO2/Al2O3 ratio of 1.93, and also can reduce CaO impurities from 5.81% to 2.16% by addition of 1.5 M NH4Cl with agitation time of 12 hours.
