INTERVIEW SKILLS AND PREPARING FOR HR ROUND QUESTIONS

INTRODUCTION
What is interview? An interview is a conversation between two or more people (the interviewer and the interviewee) where questions are asked by the interviewer to obtain information from the interviewee.

Interviews are broadly categorized into two types 1) Employment interviews Job interview Case interview Informational interview 2) Other interviews Cognitive interview Investigative interview Ladder interview Mock interview Clinical interview

TYPES OF INTERVIEW

PURPOSE
Both interviewee and the interviewer each have a need: the former wants a job and the interviewer wants to find the right person to fill the job. The interview is an opportunity for further screening. The features that are checked are What can he do for us Why does he want to work with us?

HOW TO PREPARE
Research How to Interview Self-Assessment Research the Field and Employer Practice Commonly Asked Interview Questions
1. Tell me about yourself. 2. Why are you interested in working for us? What do you know about us? 3. What are your greatest strengths and weaknesses? 4. What are your short term/long term goals? 5. Why are you the best candidate for the position? 6. What questions do you have for us?

ON THE DAY OF INTERVIEW


Prepare a folder that contains Company information
Extra resumes and letters of reference Ten to fifteen well thought questions for interviewer

A blank legal pad, a pen etc. Get up 2-3 hours earlier, See to it that you are dressed well, usually in formals and groomed well. Eat a good meal a few hours before the meeting Call the day before and confirm the appointment Be certain of the directions and the name of the person to ask upon arrival

DURING THE INTERVIEW


Take time to understand question and then answer it. It is not question of how fast you answer but how well you answer Be expressive, talk crisply and slowly. Do not mumble, stammer or use a monotone. Keep the answers to point. Never lie in an interview Never blame or badmouth anyone during an interview Never argue, always give polite responses If you do not know the answer be frank, admit it

HR ROUND QUESTIONS
Tell me about yourself? Brief personal background overview, origin, academic background, accomplishments and credentials, most impressive strengths. Do you feel you have made the correct career choice? The intent here is to confirm that he applicant enjoys his/her profession and investment on him is worthwhile What are your short term and long term career objectives? The interviewer wants to see how applicant envisions his future and how realistic his goals are.

HR ROUND QUESTIONS
How do you define leadership and how do you define yourself as a leader? This is to test the understand the difference between management and leadership which is crucial in todays competitive world What is success to you? 3 traits in you that have made you successful It is an open ended tricky question because success is different for everyone. The best answer is one that addresses the achievement of company or organizational goals rather than any other area of your life

HR ROUND QUESTIONS
Why should I hire you? Dont you think you are over qualified for this job? What was the biggest mistake you ever made and how did u come across that? Where do you see yourself in 3 years, 5 years or 10 years? Why are you interested to work here? Why do you want to work for our company? AFTER THE INTERVIEW: when your interview is finished,do not rush out.Thank the interviewer for giving you the oppurtunity to be interviewed.

CONCLUSION
These interviews are usually quick, efficient and low cost strategies that result in a short list of qualified candidates. Plan, prepare, practice and rehearse. There is no substitute for preparation. Having proper preparation in addition to qualifications can help to crack the interview and emerge as professionals.
