INTRODUCTION
n

Trenchless technology is basically making a tunnel below the surface and installing service lines like water or gas pipes, electric or telecommunication cables etc without any disruption to the public with minimum amount of surface excavation It also makes it possible to install the utilities under rivers, canals and other obstacles with no disruption of flow and with minimum or no damage to the environment

33

New installation
Methods for the installation of a new pipeline or duct, including dealing with service connections are : Micro tunneling Horizontal directional drilling Short drive systems Guided drilling

44

MICRO TUNNELING

Used to describe remotely controlled mechanical tunneling systems. Used extensively for sewage work where surface disruption has to be minimized Noise levels and traffic disruptions are minimized

55

Micro tunneling
66

Horizontal directional drilling

Used for installing pressure pipes under major obstacles such as motor way intersections, large rivers and airport runways.

77

Short drive systems

Auger boring
To excavate the soil, which is transported by auger flights operating in a casing to the drive pit. range 100 to 1000 mm diameter

Impact moling
n

During moling, a pneumatically driven machine known as a mole forces its way through the soil along the desired path of pipe Mole is a steel cylinder 60cm long and 6cm diameter, works as a pneumatic cylinder with compressed air causing the head of the mole to repeatedly hammer against the soil infront of it

PIPE RAMMING & THRUST BORING

>Used to install steel pipes and casings over
distances up to 30m long and 1.5m dia

>It is not suitable in soils where there are

solid rock formations >Used for shallow installations under railway lines and roads >Horizontal and vertical installations

GUIDED DRILLING
Guided drilling employs an excavation or soil displacement with compact lightweight rig for rapid mobilization. Small diameter jets, mechanized cutting tools or displacement heads attached to a flexible drill string are positioned to form a bore as the head is thrust forward

Pipe bursting
n

In this method an existing pipeline can be replaced with a pipeline of the same or larger dimension without opening up the ground.

1717

Pipe Eating
n

Pipe eating is an online micro tunnel replacement technique The existing defective pipeline is crushed and removed through the new pipeline

1818

RELINING THE EXISTING PIPES

n

Cured-in-Place lining Close-fit linings Slip-lining Spray linings

1919

Curedin-Place lining
A resin saturated, coated filled tube is inverted(left) or pulled (right) into a damaged pipe

Next, hot water or steam is used to cure the resin & form a tightfitting, jointless & corrosion-resistant replacement pipe 2020

Disadvantages of Open trench method

n

It creates obstruction of roads, causing traffic jams and interrupts surface operations Pumping may be required in areas with high water table Many a times, while cutting deep trenches in congested areas, cracks appear in the adjacent buildings Involves excavation, pipe removal & replacement, backfilling and site restoration

ADVANTAGES OF NO-DIG TECHNOLOGY

1. 2. 3.

4. 5.

It reduces damage of valuable surface Quiet and non-disruptive technique Requires less exposed working area and hence safer for both workers and community Excavation is not necessary between access points Requires less space underground, minimizing chances of interfering with existing utilities or abandoned pipes

CONCLUSION
1.

2.

3.

By adopting this technology, we can successfully implement pipes under the surface with out making any disruptions to the environment and public This enables us to retain our available resources. There by keeping the earth unexcavated The recent development is the use of robots. They can enter hazardous environment and provide users with digital data
