OBJECTIVES

To determine whether any harmful substances present in expended polystyrene food packaging material. To identify the harmful substance by using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) / GC instrument.

To determine the minimum temperature that can cause migration of harmful substances.

SIGNIFICANT OF STUDY

To contribute the new knowledge related to food packaging and its problems. To make consumers aware of the chemical contents in the polystyrene food packaging materials to prevent any health problems.

PROBLEM STATEMENTS

Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) is a rigid cellular plastic, which is found as coffee cup, Maggie bowl and other food packaging materials.

EPS might contains some harmful chemical that possibly of leach out into the food.

CONT

The harmful food when consume, normally cause a bad effect to the health like carcinogenic effects. This experimental work to be carried out will help to identify the harmful substances and determine the safe/optimum temperature that will minimize the leaching of chemical into its content.

METHODOLOGY
Heat the oil to 70oC
Transfer immediately into the EPS container Stand the oil in the container for 15 minutes Analyzed by using FTIR / GC instrument Repeat the procedure above by using room temperature, 80oC, 90oC, 100oC, 110oC, 120oC and 130oC
