Video Over IP
Video conferencing (Basic Concept) How Video Conferencing Works

Video over IP is the delivery of video and audio (usually compressed) over packetized networks using Internet Protocol (IP).

Uses various applications of the Internet like instant messaging, email, file upload/download, message boards, etc.
Students may connect to a live video feed of a live classroom streamed over the Internet.

Technology assistant is usually provided to provide interaction between the distance students and the instructor and onsite students

H.323 Multimedia Conferencing

Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) H.264 Video Compression T.120 Data Protocols for Multimedia Conferencing

H.323 is a standard that specifies the components, protocols and procedures that provide multimedia communication services real time audio, video.
H.323 is part of a family of ITU-T (International Telecommunications Union) recommendations.

Terminals are the client endpoints on the LAN that provide real time bidirectional multimedia communications.
An H.323 terminal can either be a personal computer (PC) or a stand-alone device

A gateway connects two dissimilar networks.

It is a communications device or assembly that transforms data that is received from one network into a format that can be used by a different network.

MCUs provide support for conferences of three or more H.323 terminals (endpoints). All terminals participating in the conference establish a connection with the MCU.

It is a signaling protocol for creation, modifying, termination of different sessions between communicating parties
SIP refers to a protocol that allows computers to talk to each other without going through a central station

H.264 is an industry standard for video compression, the process of converting digital video into a format that takes up less capacity when it is stored or transmitted.
H.264 is another name for the MPEG-4 Advanced Video Coding (AVC) standard

T.120 is an international standard for data conferencing. It is specified by the ITU and is used by H.323 and other software.
Support data conferencing similar to voice and video conferencing, multiple users can all share the same data in real time.

There are basically two types of video conferencing.

Point to point video conferencing Multi point video conferencing

In point to point video conferencing only two computers directly connected to each other.
In multipoint conferencing people from different locations can simultaneously coordinate using different protocols

Video conferencing is an example of one of the new technologies that have came out and made things easier for people.
Increases productivity Improves understanding Reduce travel expenses Allows multipoint meetings Improves effectiveness

In Pakistan many universities, government offices, business organizations and hospitals are using this technology.
