ISLAMIC CONCEPT OF EDUCATION

Allah Says in Surah Al-Baqarah: 30) Behold, your Lord said to the angels: I will create A vicegerent on Earth. They said: Will you place therein one who will make Mischief therein and shed blood? While we do celebrate Your praises And glorify Your holy (name)? He said: I know what you know not.

31) And He taught Adam the names of all things; then He placed them Before the angels, and said: Tell me the names of these if you are right. 32) They said: Glory to You, of knowledge We have none, save what You have taught us: in truth it is you Who are perfect in knowledge and wisdom. 33) He said: O Adam! Tell them, Their names. When he had told them, their names, Allah said: Did I not tell you That I know the secrets of heaven And earth, and I know what you reveal And what you conceal.?

Allah Says in Surah Al-Alaq: 1) Proclaim! (or read) in the name of your Lord and Cherisher, Who created2) Created man, out of A (mere) clot of Congealed blood: 3) Proclaim! And your Lord Is Most Bountiful4) He Who taught (The use of) the Pen5) Taught man that Which he knew not.

What is knowledge?
Knowledge is defined as: Expertise, and skills acquired by a person through experience or education; the theoretical or practical understanding of a subject. justified true belief.

ISLAMIC CONCEPT OF KNOWLEDGE

The term used for knowledge in Arabic is ilm, which, has a much wider connotation than its synonyms in English and other Western languages. Knowledge falls short of expressing all the aspects of ilm. Knowledge in the Western world means information about something, divine or corporeal, while ilm is an all-embracing term covering theory, action and education.

IMPORTANCE OF KNOWLEDGE IN ISLAM

Allah Says in Surah Al-Mujadalah: Allah will Raise up, to (suitable) ranks (And degrees), those of you Who believe and who have Been granted Knowledge. Similarly, Allah Says in Surah Al-Fatir: Those truly fear Allah, Among His Servants, Who have knowledge

SAYINGS OF PROPHET MUHAMMED (SAW)

Seek knowledge, as who seeks it for the sake of Allah, does a righteous job. Whosoever makes effort to gain knowledge, is like a person who worships Allah. A knowledgeable man does not die. Scholars are the heir of the prophet. Knowledge makes a person to fear Allah. Whosoever talks about knowledge, is like a person who praises Allah.

IMAM AL-GHAZALIS VIEWS

Religious knowledge It is acquired from the Quran and Sunnah. It is the most dignified knowledge and it is without doubt. secular knowledge The knowledge is needed to enhance the understanding of the religious knowledge since it was a revelation.

TYPES OF SECULAR KNOWLEDGE

Beneficial knowledge: Those sciences, which benefit society and help it to progress, e.g. medical knowledge and mathematics. Accordingly, the acquisition of these sciences and disciplines is Fard al-Kifayyah,

Neutral Knowledge: Those disciplines that will not really enhance ones beneficial knowledge but there is nothing wrong if they are studied, e.g. the history of England. Harmful Knowledge: Those disciplines which are harmful, such as black magic and gambling. It is therefore, Haram to acquire such knowledge.

WHAT IS CURRICULUM?

The textbook is NOT the curriculum! Curriculum is the entire body of knowledge that a school has decided a student should learn at each level/grade. curriculum is based on what we think should be taught, therefore curriculum is based on our values what we believe is important.

DIFFERENT APPROACHES TOWARDS DEVELOPING ISLAMIC CURRICULA.

limited curriculum approach to put all Islamic knowledge/thinking into one Islamic Studies class, while the remainder of the curriculum remains secular. more traditional and for the time being, more practical. integrated curriculum approach to rewrite the curriculum of every subject so that Islamic knowledge/thinking is integrated into every subject. An ideal approach, which will take years to become practical.
