Founded as a sitio of the town of Polangui, in the Province of Albay.

Ligao was ceded to the town of Oas in the year 1665 and later became an independent municipality in the year 1666. the once minor settlement called sitio of Cavasi had since then proposed economically socially and politically. Three hundred thirty five years later. On March 24,2001. Ligao was converted into component city by virtue of Republic Act No. 9008.

Ligao City is geographically located between 13-14 degrees latitude and 123-124 degrees longitude. It is centrally located in the 3rd District of Albay and bounded on the North by the municipality of Oas, on the South by municipality of Guinobatan. On the East by the City of Tabaco and on the West by the municipality of Pioduran. The Provincial Capitol of Albay and the City of Legazpi are approximately 27kms. and 30kms respectively, from the City of Ligao. Ligao City has a total land area 246.40 sq. kms. It accounts for 9.65% of the total land area of the Province of Albay

The City of Ligao is composed of 55 barangays. 11 urban. 41 rural and 3 coastal. Urban: Bagumbayan, Bay, Binatagan, Calzada, Dunao, Gilid, Layon, Sta. Cruz, Tinago, Tomolin, and Tuburan. Rural: Abella, Allang, Amtic, Bacong, Balanac, Baligang, Barayong, Basag, Batang, Binanowan, Bobonsuran, Bunga, Busac, Busay, Cavasi, Culliat, Francia, Herrera, Macalidong, Mahaba, Malama, Nabonton, Nasisi, Oma-Oma, Palapas, Pandan,

Rural:

Paulog, Paulba, Pinamaniquian, Pinit, Ranao-Ranao, San Vicente, Tagpo, Tambo, Tandarura, Tastas, Tinampo, Tiongson, Tula-Tula Grande, TulaTula Pequeo and Tupaz Coastal: Cabarian, Catburawan and Maonon

With a growth rate of 1.68%, Ligao City is the largest of the seven Municipalities in the 3rd District of Albay in terms of population with 101, 179 per year 2007 Census and 19,853 total number of Households.. A greater number of this population, i.e., 72,806 or 72% are in the Rural areas while 28,373 of its population or 28% are living in the urban areas. Population density is 410 persons per square kilometer. Barangay Tinago registered the most number of populations with 4,767.

Agriculture: Agriculture is the backbone of Ligao Citys economy. 57.27% of its total land area is devoted to agriculture. Farming is the major source of livelihood with coconut as the dominant crop and extensively planted in 46 out of 55 barangays comprising the City. It occupies about 83.67% or 11.808 hectares of the total agricultural land. This is followed by cereal crops 5.257 hectares planted with vegetables, rootcrops and banana. Livestock raising is one of the secondary broiler, cattle, carabao, swine and native chicken. These are mostly produced by backyard raisers and a number of commercial and semicommercial raisers. 2. Fisheries Ligao City has both inland and marine fishing resources. Inland fishing is composed of 17.45 hectares with an annual production of 2,000,000 tilapia fingerlings while 3 coastal barangays of Maonon, Cabarian and Catburawan are concentrated in marine fishing. 3. Ligao City has a climate characterized by combination of second and fourth type. Roughly two thirds of the city fall under the second type characterized by no dry season with a very produced maximum period from November to December while the fourth type has a rainfall more or less evenly distributed thought the year.

The ground surface profile of the city is characterized by topography of level to nearly level (0-3% slope) which occupies about 5,680 hectares followed by gentle to undulating (slopes of 3-8%) which consist of about 3,192 hectares; undulating to rolling (slopes of 8-18%) with 7,824 hectares; rolling to moderately steep (slopes of 18-30%) that occupies about 6,183 hectares and steep slopes (slopes of 30-50%) has an area of about 1,604 hectares. the different soil types found in Ligao City are Libon Silk Clay which is found in the level to nearly areas and is deep alluvial soil. This soil type is not prone to erosion and at times, inundated by the action of surface waters such as streams: Libon Loam which requires irrigation and at times, inundated by Loam is found in the slopes of Mount Mayon and has a good drainage characteristics but prone to erosion; Mauraro Gravel Sandy Loam is found undulating to moderate steep areas; Tigaon Clay is found in steep areas and Sevilla Clay is found in undulating to rolling areas ; This clay is easily eroded.

The rock formation in the city belongs to the geological age ranging from Upper Miocne. Pleistocene and recent rock formations. These rocks formations are classified into Sedimentary Rocks and Igneous and Metamorphic rocks. Potential geological hazards affecting in the city are the presence of Mount Mayon located in the upper Northeast part of the city. Barangays within its 5-6 km. danger zone are the most affected by this potential hazard; and an active fault line running in the direction of Northwest to Southwest. The minerals found in the city are nonmetallic.

The total Labor Force (15 to 65 years old or the working group) is 53.98% or 54.471 persons.

Majority of the population speak Bicol-Ligao dialect. Other languages/ dialects spoken are tagalog, English, Chinese,Waray,. Tausog, Spanish and Maranao. Most are Roman Catholic. The rest are Protestants of vaious denominations, Iglesia ni Cristo, Seventh-Day Adventist, Mormons, Islam and Jehovahs Witnesses.

Airport There is no airport facility of any type located within the city. The nearest airport is in Legazpi City which is about 30 kms from Ligao City.
