The role of a modern fire and rescue service has increased to cover the core functions of preventing, protecting and responding. A big chunk of the work now focuses on how we can prevent accidents and emergencies happening in the first place, as they believe this is the best way to protect our communities.

Working in the Community

The fire and rescue service do a lot of work in the community to show people the dangers of fire and fire related crimes, they usually relate this more towards younger people like teenagers, the reason for this being that young people between the ages of 11 19 years old are the group most likely to become involved in arson and it is to encourage them not to become involved in fire crimes and anti-social behaviour and to prevent them becoming harmed or killed in accidental fires or causing fires through ignorance or carelessness.
What Schemes do we run? Firefly - for referred individuals aged 11 - 17 Community Fire Cadets - for young people aged 13 - 16 Fire Team and FireTeam6- for referred groups aged 14 - 16 Prince's Trust - for referred individuals aged 16 - 25 Individuals are referred by a range of different organisations such as Connexions, Youth Offending Teams and the Probation Service.

Fire Fighting

The fire and rescue authority must make provision for the purpose of Extinguishing fires in its area. Protecting life and property in the event of fires in its area. Road Traffic Accidents The fire and rescue authority must make provision for the purpose of Rescuing people in the event of road traffic accidents in its area. Protecting people from serious harm, to the extent that it considers it reasonable to do so, in the event of road traffic accidents.
