MULTI TOUCH (SURFACE COMPUTING)

HISTORY
MT technology began in 1982, when the University of Torontos Input Research Group developed the first human-input MT system
In 1984, Bell Labs engineered a touch screen which changed images with more than one hand.

In 1985, the University of Toronto group used capacitance rather than bulky camera-based optical sensing systems.
In 1991, Pierre Wellner published a paper on his multi-touch Digital Desk, which supported multi-finger and pinching motions.

Apple acquired Fingerworks and its multi-touch technology in 2005

Mainstream exposure to multi-touch technology occurred in 2007 when the iPhone gained popularity, with Apple stating they 'invented multi touch.

THE MULTI TOUCH TECHNOLOGY

Set of interaction techniques allowing computer users to control graphical applications with several fingers.

Multi-touch devices consist of a touch screen as well as a software capable of recognizing multiple simultaneous touch points.

THE TECHNOLOGY
IMPORTANT TERMS
Hacked Cameras Cameras which have their IR filters replaced with visible light filters, thus seeing only infrared light . Tracking The technology that enables multiple fingers to perform various actions without interrupting each other.

BASIC WORKING

In regards to multitouch, infrared light is mainly used

to distinguish between a visual image on the touch surface and the object/finger being tracked. In order to separate the objects being tracked from the visual display, a hacked camera is used to only see the infrared spectrum of light; this cuts out the visual image from being seen by the camera and therefore, the camera is able to see only the infrared light that illuminates the object/finger on the touch surface.

HOW HAS SURFACE CHANGED?

Slim device A richer visual experience. A vision-based touch experience Touch-enabled from start to finish. New Quick Controls More customization options Easier remote administration Streamlined development for touch

PIXEL TECHNOLOGY

IMPORTANT TERMS
Frustrated Total Internal ReflectionFTIR is a name used by the multi-touch community to describe an optical multi-touch methodology developed by Jeff Han .

Compliant Surface
The compliant surface is an overlay placed above the acrylic waveguide in a FTIR based multi-touch system.

DiffuserThe camera sees only the touches, not all objects behind the surface because of a diffuser which leaves out the noise data .

BaffleThe baffle is required to hide the light that is leaking from the sides of the LEDs

AcrylicUsing acrylic waveguide for screen prevents it from bending .

FTIR

BASIC WORKING
- The compliant layer is simply an additional layer between the projection surface and the acrylic. It enhances the finger contact and gives you more robust blobs, particularly when dragging. - In the FTIR technique, the infrared light is emitted into side of the acrylic waveguide, the light travels inside the medium (due to total internal refection), when you touch the surface of the acrylic (you frustrate this TIR effect) causing the light to refract within the medium on points of contact and creating the bright blobs. There is much experimentation ongoing in the quest for the perfect compliant layer.

PIXEL SENSING

BASIC WORKING
A contact (finger/blob/tag/object) is placed on the display IR back light unit provides light (though the optical sheets, LCD

and protection glass) that hits the contact. Light reflected back from the contact is seen by the integrated sensors Sensors convert the light signal into an electrical signal/value Values reported from all of the sensors are used to create a picture of what is on the display The picture is analyzed using image processing techniques The output is sent to the PC. It includes the corrected sensor image and various contact types (fingers/blobs/tags)

MICROSFT SURFACE
The Microsoft Surface 2.0, a coffee-table-sized, tablet

is like a touchscreen computer. Emerged in 2007 and used cameras and touchscreen to interact with people and objects. SUR 40 The model available for commercial use is manufactured in collaboration with Samsung. Focuses on 1. Commercial business 2. Education 3. Health Care 4. Retail

SONY ATRACTSYS
Few weeks back Sony unveiled its HD screen device

called Sony atracTable. This device has a 35 inch , full HD touch screen developed by a Swiss company Actractsys, the atracTable will be launched sometime this month , and is bringing significant competition to MS. The Sony atracTable will be able to recognize the movements made by the users body , and according to Sony , the device will also recognize the users age , sex and emotional status .Also interact with movie devices just like MS.

Touch- The Possibilities

Make content more engaging. Give your customers immersive and collaborative ways to engage with photos, videos and more.

Plan and simulate. Bring to life visualization, simulations and calculations.

Make learning more fun. Breathe new life into the education process with rich visualizations . Transform the shopping experience. connect customers with more options, recommendations, product and service comparisons, and personalized service.

Connect with customers through games and pastimes. Have some fun by putting Surface in restaurants, bars etc.
Communicate and connect. Give people an intriguing new way to get the information (maps and tourist destinations) in a hotel lobby.

6.

User gestures, finger movements on screen can actually be used to manipulate digital data. Easy to use Eliminates the hassle of a stylus ,keyboard etc. More work by less effort User can pick and drop the cursor wherever desired. Better working experience- Touching instead of pressing saves energy. Easy to work with- Inexperienced toddlers and old people can comfortably use it.
