INTRODUCTION: The Metabolic Syndrome X (MSX) is a complex upheaval, made up of some metabolic disturbances, being mainly related with the insulin resistance and abdominal fat. It is important to designate the association of the MSX with cardiovascular illness. The MSX it increases general mortality in about 2 times and the cardiovascular one in 3 times. Although its high social-economic impact, not yet exists in Brazil official data on the distribution of the MSX in the population. OBJECTIVES: The present study it has as objective to characterize and to establish the frequency of MSX cases in the metropolitan region of the Recife Pernambuco Brazil. METHODOLOGY: The present study it counted on the participation of 199 voluntary individuals resident in communities of the metropolitan region of Recife Pernambuco Brazil, of both the sex and with age 18 years. The parameters biochemists had been dosed using commercial enzymatic methods (LABTEST-MG), except the plasma insulin that was dosed by the method microparticles enzymatic immune assay - MEIA (Abbott Axsym System, GE), with low reactivity crossed for pro-insulin of only 0.016%. For characterization of the individuals as carrying of MSX the criteria of the NCEP-ATPIII and the EGIR. CRITERIA EGIR NCEP-ATPIII

RESULTS : The MSX was investigated in 199 individuals, of these 73 had been characterized as carrying of the MSX in such a way for the criteria of the NCEP-ATPIII how much for of the EGIR . 101 individuals had been characterized as carrying of 1 or 2 riots, not satisfying none of the criteria. E only 25 individuals had been considered healthful.

CONCLUSIONS: The MSX was found in about 40% of the studied population, disclosing to its high incidence. Demonstrating, in such a way, the necessity of an intervention of the authorities in health, in the intention of prevent the impacts caused for the MSX, such as the CVD.
