ICT in society

How ICT affects businesses, consumers & employees

You need to be able to explain the benefits and drawbacks of the use of information and communication technology in:

manufacturing, business, medicine, the home, leisure education tele-working.

2

To what extent has machinery displaced workers?

Arguments for? Arguments against?
Have more jobs have been created by the new technology (computerisation)? What has happened to clerical workers over the last 20 years? How have their skills been lost/changed?

Impact of ICT & where we live/work

Call Centres

Consider British Airways, Insurance Companies, Banks etc all who use call centres, but, where are these centres?
4

What is Tele-working?
What are the benefits of Tele-working? Consider: environment, commuting, working hours, commitments, space saving, team-working in a network.

What are the problems with Tele-working? Consider: management, organisational loyalty, social isolation, separation of work with leisure time.
5

Consumer issues
What are some of the new ICT products available now?
Addidas store virtual mirrors

A super tablet E-ink

6

Consumer issues
What new products are on the way?
Not just shoes but clothes

New Projector system?

The EyeMove PC combines the functionality of a digital projector and computer into one circular-shaped device. Simply hang it on your wall or place it flat on a desk and project games, movies, or applications.
8

Transparent Toaster
This innovative concept uses special heating glass to warm a single slice of bread. Unfortunately, the glass does not reach a high enough temperature at this time to actually toast the bread. No word yet on if this concept will go into production
9

New Batteries
Two-thirds of mobile and personal digital assistant owners said two days' active battery life was vital. The report said that poor battery life on mobile devices was one of the main reasons people did not play more games, music and video on their devices more often.
10

IT in Banking
How is IT used in Banking? telephone banking, Internet banking, ATMs, Debit cards, Credit cards, MICR (Magnetic Ink Character Recognition) e.g. cheque processing, Direct debiting, etc.

Paying in cheques scanning

M.I.C.R = Magnetic ink character recognition
11

What are the issues of IT in Banking

Cloning cards Fraud E-scams Consumer confidence

12

E-commerce Virtual stores?

A virtual store is a web page that hosts several stores on one website address. The store owners do not want to set up & maintain their own web-pages and so employ a host to manage and maintain the virtual shop for them! Web sites used for advertising have been developed into a virtual store.
13

Internet shopping
What are the advantages for the shop? What are the advantages for the customer?

What are the implication?

14

How does IT improve home shopping?

What products can take advantage of INTERNET shopping? Which products are very difficult to sell on line?

15

What issues within Internet shopping will increase its use?

The ability to arrange delivery outside work hours eg in the evening or weekend is an important factor. Broadband access has speeded up the process of selecting and ordering item on web sites
16

How are computers used in manufacturing?

What is CAD? Computer aided Design What is CAM? Computer aided manufacture
17

So why is it important for a restaurant to carefully consider its layout?

C.A.D. in restaurants
18

More C.A.D images

19

CAD
How can a computer image help with design? How does CAD enhance sales and marketing? What is the difference between Vector based graphics and Bit-mapped graphics?

20

Vector V Bitmap images!

21

Bitmap images
A bitmap image is quite literally a collection of squares that, taken together, make up the image. The squares might be of different colors, but they are all the same size. Because a bitmap image is this collection of squares, it doesn't hold up well to expansion

22

Vector images
the vector image's parts are scalable. This means that designers can change the resolution of a vector image in both directions, making a high-res image lower or making a low-res image higher. If designers are looking for an image that can be easily scaled in both directions, then their choice between vector and bitmap should be an easy one.
23

Spot the difference in a Vector?

24

Spot the difference with a bitmap image?

25

CAM - basic components

An actuator is mechanical CAM uses Robotics which require the device for moving or controlling following parts: something. a sensor, They are used in the computer a microprocessor, of an environment, control an actuator. industrial automation and in robotics.

26

Actuators

27

Why are robots so useful?

Give some examples of where robotics are used? Consider: repetition, strength, quality, costs, hazardous environment.
